What Is Cancer?

Cancer occurs when cells in the body begin to grow and divide uncontrollably. Normally, cells follow a structured cycle where old or damaged cells are replaced by new ones. However, in cancer, this process goes out of control, leading to the unchecked growth of abnormal cells, which may form masses known as tumors.

Not all tumors are cancerous. Some tumors are benign, meaning they do not spread to other parts of the body and are not usually life-threatening. On the other hand, malignant (cancerous) tumors can invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body through the bloodstream or lymphatic system, making the disease more dangerous.

What Causes Cancer?

  • Environmental Factors: Smoking, excessive exposure to sunlight without protection, environmental pollution, inhaling harmful chemicals, and exposure to carcinogens.
  • Internal Factors: Genetic mutations, hereditary factors, aging, and a weakened immune system.
  • Lifestyle Choices: Unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, obesity, and excessive alcohol consumption.

Is Cancer Contagious?

No, cancer is not contagious. It cannot spread from one person to another through touch, breathing, or even sharing food. However, certain viruses can increase the risk of developing specific types of cancer, such as:

  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV): Can cause cervical cancer and some types of head and neck cancers.
  • Hepatitis B and C: Increases the risk of liver cancer.
  • Epstein-Barr Virus: May be linked to certain types of blood and lymphatic cancers.

How Can We Protect Ourselves from Cancer?

  • ✔ Follow a Healthy Diet: Focus on antioxidant-rich foods like fruits and vegetables, and reduce the intake of sugars and processed foods.
  • ✔ Exercise Regularly: Physical activity not only helps maintain a healthy weight but also reduces the risk of certain cancers like colon and breast cancer.
  • ✔ Quit Smoking: Smoking is one of the leading causes of cancer, especially lung, throat, and bladder cancer.
  • ✔ Protect Your Skin from the Sun: Use sunscreen when exposed to the sun for long periods, especially during peak UV hours.
  • ✔ Schedule Regular Check-Ups: Early detection makes a significant difference in treatment success, so make sure to get regular screenings, especially if you have a family history of cancer.
  • ✔ Reduce Stress and Anxiety: Chronic stress can weaken the immune system, so practice relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga.

An Important Message: Cancer Is Not a Death Sentence!

In the past, a cancer diagnosis was considered terrifying, but today, medicine has advanced significantly, and there are highly effective treatments like immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and gene therapy. Additionally, early detection greatly improves recovery rates.

The most important thing is awareness and knowledge. A good understanding of the disease helps you deal with it better, whether for prevention or supporting someone affected. If you have any questions or need help, don’t hesitate to ask. Your health is the top priority!
